The Magdeburg Water Bridge in Germany is a prime example of combining functionality with beauty. It acts as a freeway for boats.

Connecting the Eastern and Western points of the country, it spans over the River Elbe near Berlin. The stunning, water filled overpass crosses over the river, connecting two important shipping canals. Aerial photography showcases this amazing feat surrounded by beautiful countryside.

At over 3,000 feet long, it is described as the "longest navigable aqueduct in the world". The initial construction phases began in the 1930s, however the work ceased when World War II started and remained halted until 1997. The over pass was finally completed and opened in 2003.

The aqueduct serves as a much-needed link, as previously barges were forced to take a longer route via a boat lift and lock system on the Elbe River which was unreliable due to fluctuating water levels.

Pedestrians have the opportunity to get a close-up view of the ships coming through, as two opposing walking paths reside on each side of the crossing.
